He rescued wounded birds, raised pigeons, and often accompanied his stepfather on hunting trips. He befriended wildlife artists Stu Ferrier through work, and David Hagerbaumer while in the U.S. Marine Corps, both of whom encouraged him and helped to develop his technique. An avid sportsman and ardent contributor to conservation organizations, David Maass has been actively painting game birds for more than fifty years. Over the decades, Maass has designed more than thirty conservation stamps and prints, a distinction few artists can claim. Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Minnesota Wildlife Heritage Foundation have each named David Maass their Artist of the Year. Maass' original paintings and limited edition prints have been exhibited in galleries and shows throughout the country, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin.

David A. Maas is one of the representative Minnesota artists from Rochester. Hunting trips with his father as a child brought Maas a special interest in wildlife animals, which later became some of the inspiration behind Maass' artworks. Many of his original pieces are housed in the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

David Dietz (1897-1984) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist and author. Dietz attended Case Western Reserve University and received his bachelor's degree in 1919. In 1921 he took a position as science editor for the Scripps-Howard Newspapers a job he kept until his retirement in 1977. From 1927 until his retirement he was a lecturer in general science at his alma mater. Dietz was a member of the Publicity Committee of the United States National Research Council's Division of Medical Science and of Harvard University's Institute on War Problems and was a consultant to the U. S. Army Surgeon General from 1944 to 1947. He served as science correspondent for NBC News from 1940-1950 and was heard on Morgan Beatty News of the World over 181 stations.
